Instructions:
Basic materials:
· 7” muslin squares, washed and ironed. (bleached
muslin recommended)
· An archival quality, permanent,
waterproof ink pen (for example, Pigma Micron pen, size 08)
Alternate methods:
As long as your materials are waterproof and permanent, you
may embroider, applique, paint or draw your squares. You may decorate your message block(s) or just do art and no
message.
People who sew:
For those who wish to border their squares, 100% cotton
batiks in yellows, oranges, purples, reds for the outrage blocks; greens,
blues, lavenders for the hope blocks. Cut the border strips 2” wide. Attach
borders with a ¼” seam.
Procedure:
Think about your message.
Make your message of outrage as specific as possible, relating to
particular actions or events. Don’t worry about duplication of topic. Many may
write about the same outrage; that’s fine.
Your message of hope may come from any source that inspires
you. It may be a record of a good
outcome, a wish list, a poem, a prayer, or a quotation.
If you want to practice, write your message first on a 7”
square of paper.
Copy the message onto the muslin, leaving at least ¾” inch
space around the message. Write as clearly as possible. We’ve found that
writing slowly helps to make the print dark and clear.
Sign your name on the square, give your town and state, and write
the date.
Please send in both outrage and hope squares. We need the balance for our quilt and in our
lives!
